Jaz Nile cruises: Regent, Viceroy and Celebrity compared

Jaz sails more ships on the Nile than anyone else, under the JAZ, JAZ Elite and Steigenberger names. We sell three of the Jaz ships between Luxor and Aswan: the Regent and the Viceroy, the two suite heavy JAZ Elite boats, and the Celebrity, the big classic one. Here is what separates them, and which one to ask for.

The short version

  • Three ships, all five star, all on the classic Luxor to Aswan route with the same programme.
  • Regent and Viceroy are built around suites of 38 square metres: on both, every suite has a balcony of its own and every cabin window opens to the river. Both cost $1,760 for three nights and $1,940 for four, in our luxury class.
  • Viceroy is the smallest, with 37 rooms, 21 of them suites. On the Regent, 23 of the rooms are suites.
  • Celebrity is the classic choice in our deluxe class: a large ship of cabins with panoramic sliding windows, a wide pool deck and a doctor on board. Its price changes with the season, so check the current rate on its page.
  • Regent leaves Aswan on Fridays and Luxor on Mondays. Viceroy and Celebrity leave Aswan on Wednesdays and Luxor on Saturdays.

What every Jaz Nile cruise ship has in common

The route, the temples and the guiding are the same on all three, and so is the shape of the day: full board on the ship, a pool and a bar on the sundeck, one main restaurant, a lounge bar, and three nights downstream from Aswan, four nights upstream from Luxor, or the two joined into a week without changing ship. A standard cabin is 19 square metres on all three. What changes is whether your room opens onto the river, how many other people are on board, and how much of the ship is suites. The programme is written out on our three night and four night pages.

Jaz Regent

Cabins of 19 square metres whose panoramic windows open into French balconies, and 23 suites of 38 square metres, each with a balcony of its own. Every cabin bathroom has a bathtub, and the suites add a separate shower. There is a pool and a bar on the sundeck, a sauna, a gym and a lounge bar, and the restaurant seats everyone together.

The Regent is the only one of the three that leaves Aswan on Fridays and Luxor on Mondays, so if you want a Jaz ship with a balcony and your flights fall on those days, this is it.

Through us: three nights $1,760, four nights $1,940 per person, in our luxury class. Jaz Regent page.

Jaz Viceroy

Mostly suites: 21 of them at 38 square metres with their own balcony, and 16 cabins of 19 square metres whose windows slide open onto a French balcony. Every bathroom has a bathtub, and the suites add a separate shower. The sundeck runs over two levels with a pool and a bar, and there is a gym, a sauna and a massage room on board.

Thirty-seven rooms is few for a ship of this class, and it shows in the quiet: a sundeck that never fills, and a restaurant where everyone sits down at once. Wednesdays from Aswan, Saturdays from Luxor.

Through us: three nights $1,760, four nights $1,940 per person, in our luxury class. Jaz Viceroy page.

Jaz Celebrity

The classic one, and the budget door into the Jaz fleet. A big, straightforward five star ship: cabins of 19 square metres with large panoramic sliding windows onto the river, suites with a bathtub, a wide sundeck with a pool, a pool bar and space to sit out of the sun. Inside there is table tennis, billiards and a gift shop, and a doctor on board.

The temples, the guide and the programme are identical to the other two. What you give up is the balcony and the quieter ship, and what you keep is a serious amount of money: it costs a fraction of the suite ships. Its rate moves with the season, so we keep the current price on the Jaz Celebrity page. Wednesdays from Aswan, Saturdays from Luxor, in our deluxe class.

How to choose between them

For a balcony and a Friday or Monday departure: Regent. For the smallest, quietest ship: Viceroy. For the lowest price on a Jaz ship: Celebrity. Celebrity and Viceroy sail on the same days, so on those dates the choice between them is purely room against balcony, and budget.

The price shown is for a standard cabin, per person, for the whole cruise. On the Regent and the Viceroy that is the cabin with the French balcony. Suites are quoted on request. If your dates are fixed, our departure days page lists every ship that sails on the day you need.

It is worth reading how much does a Nile cruise cost before you settle on one, and the rest of the deluxe and luxury ships are listed by class. We did the same comparison for the five Sonesta ships, the six Mövenpick ships and the three Steigenberger ships.

Send us your dates and which of the three you are leaning towards, and we will confirm the cabin, the deck and the price before you commit to anything.
